Germany shows that a holiday home need not be on the Mediterranean. Rügen and Usedom, the Bay of Lübeck, Sylt and the East Frisian Islands — and inland, Lake Constance and the Mecklenburg and Upper Lusatian lake districts.

People who buy here mostly buy not for two weeks a year but for the many long weekends in between. Demand for holiday homes on the coast and by the lakes is correspondingly steady.

What matters here is not the distance to the sea but the holiday region: a house on Lake Constance belongs here just as much as one on Rügen.
