Mexico. Home by the sea.

Mexico has two very different coasts: the Caribbean with Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum on the Riviera Maya, and the Pacific with Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos at the tip of Baja California. Many people buy here for the winter months, when Europe is cold, and let the property for the rest of the year.

Within a strip of 50 kilometres along the coast and 100 kilometres along the borders, foreign nationals may not hold property directly. Purchases there are made through a fideicomiso: a Mexican bank holds the property in trust, and the buyer uses, lets, bequeaths and sells it like an owner. The contract is executed by a Notario Público, who also handles taxes and registration.
