Montenegro has only around 300 kilometres of coast, but a great deal of variety in a small space: the Bay of Kotor between steep mountains, Budva with its old town, Tivat with the Porto Montenegro marina and, further south, the long sandy beaches near Ulcinj. The currency is the euro, although the country is not in the EU.
Foreign nationals can acquire apartments, houses and building plots on the same terms as residents. Agricultural land and forest are excluded and are usually bought through a Montenegrin company. The contract is notarised and recorded in the cadastre. With older properties it is worth checking the building permit beforehand, as it is not always complete.
